Catch and Release Policy

At Pakuni Lodge, we promote catch and release fishing to sustain and enhance high quality fishing. We encourage the release of all walleyes over 18 inches. All guests of Pakuni are required to release all walleyes over 21”, all northern over 27.6” and all small mouth bass over 15” regardless of where the fish was caught. By releasing these breeding size fish, you will be doing your part to ensure there will be quality fishing in the future. By releasing a trophy size fish, you may be giving another angler the opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For those who wish to display their trophy, fish must be frozen whole and intact for the taxidermist. We recommend that you consider a replica mount as an alternative. Releasing big fish is necessary to maintain the population and to ensure quality fishing for generations to come.

The Strategic Plan for Ontario Fisheries

Goal for Ontario Fisheries

Healthy aquatic ecosystems that provide sustainable benefits, contributing to society's present and future requirements for a high-quality environment, wholesome food, employment and income, recreational activity and cultural heritage.

Objectives

In order to provide sustainable benefits for the future, the objectives of the Strategic Plan are:

to protect healthy aquatic ecosystems
to rehabilitate degraded aquatic ecosystems, and,
to improve cultural, social and economic benefits from Ontario's fisheries resource.

Guiding Principles

Five "guiding principles" form the foundation for fisheries management:

sustainable development
limit to the resource
natural reproduction
knowledge
societal benefits

Sustainable Development

Sustainable development requires that adverse impacts on natural elements such as air, land and water, be minimized to ensure the aquatic ecosystem's overall integrity.

Ecosystems are a heritage for future generations. The use of resources today must not compromise the ability of those generations to meet their needs. Uses of air, land and water that affect aquatic ecosystems must be environmentally sustainable if society is to continue to benefit from economic development. Where local impacts occur, in spite of our best efforts to prevent them, compensatory actions should be taken to maintain the overall integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

Limit to the Resource

There is a limit to the natural productive capacity of aquatic ecosystems and, hence, a limit to the number of fish that can be harvested from them.

Fish, in their natural environment, are rarely visible to humans. The damaging effects of overharvesting are not readily apparent, and for that reason the need to limit harvest is not always recognized.

Since human activities, including overharvesting, pollution and improper land use practices can reduce productivity, healthy fish communities require the management of these human activities.

Natural Reproduction

Naturally reproducing fish communities, based on native fish populations, provide predictable and sustainable benefits with minimal long-term cost to society. More than 95% of the fish caught in Ontario are the result of natural reproduction. Most are native species, which have evolved since the last ice age and adapted to the ecosystems in which they live.

Although priority is placed on sustaining naturally reproducing fish communities, hatchery-dependent fisheries will continue to play a role in providing fishing opportunities in Ontario. The use of hatchery-dependent and non-native fisheries will be based on the analysis of long-term ecological, social and economic benefits and costs.

Several introduced species have established themselves as naturally reproducing species in Ontario. Some of these naturalized species, such as rainbow trout, brown trout and smelt, have become valuable components of the fishery.

Other introduced organisms, such as sea lamprey and zebra mussels, have become nuisance species. Naturalized species must be recognized and managed as part of the aquatic communities.

Knowledge

Good fisheries management is scientifically-based and relies on the collection and use of the best available knowledge.

Freshwater fisheries management is a relatively young science that has evolved over the past several decades. As we learn more about fisheries, aquatic ecosystems, and socio-economics, it is vital that we use this knowledge to manage Ontario fisheries effectively.

Societal Benefits

Resource management decisions, including allocations, shall be based on ecological, social, cultural and economic benefits and costs to society, both at present and in the future.

For thousands of years, fish have provided an important source of animal protein for humans. More recently, the state of fish communities has been recognized as an important indicator of the health of aquatic ecosystems.

Resource management decisions must take into account the enormous contribution the fisheries resource has made to the material, physical and cultural well-being of the people of Ontario. Our first priority must be to protect sufficient fish and aquatic habitat to sustain the resource. This will ensure that these benefits continue in the future.

Strategic Management Actions

The following strategic management actions address the issues that currently face fisheries managers.

1. Ensure benefits are sustained by protecting and rehabilitating aquatic ecosystems.

Ensure protection of healthy aquatic ecosystems and prevent further deterioration of degraded ecosystems.
Expand and improve efforts to rehabilitate degraded fish communities and habitat.
Allocate aquatic resources to provide a fair distribution of benefits to all stakeholders while ensuring sustainable benefits for future generations.
Provide for a variety of consumptive and non-consumptive opportunities based on naturally reproducing fish communities and judicious use of hatchery-reared fish stocks.

2. Inform and involve the public in decision making and program delivery to foster stewardship

Increase the public's understanding of resource management principles, the value of healthy ecosystems, and the results of fisheries management efforts.
Encourage communication among the public and stakeholders to foster harmony in resource use.
Develop and encourage public education and involvement programs based on the ecosystem approach to managing fisheries on a sustainable basis.
Improve consultation and involvement mechanisms for co-operative decision making and program delivery.
Work co-operatively through partnerships.

3. Ensure resources are appropriately valued.

Instill a broad appreciation of the value of the resources in those who benefit from them, and price access to aquatic resources, including fish, to reflect the cost of effective management.

4. Ensure effective program management and coordination among agencies.

Improve effectiveness of fisheries management systems.
Expand coordination among agencies sharing responsibility for managing aquatic ecosystems.
Ensure staff receive appropriate training in the skills required to be effective aquatic ecosystem managers.
Expand cooperative programs to increase efficiency and to ensure a comprehensive approach to ecosystem management.

5. Acquire and communicate essential knowledge for timely and effective resource management decision-making.

Set priorities for acquisition of new knowledge based on resource management needs.
Develop improved techniques for the acquisition and application of knowledge to protect and rehabilitate fish communities and habitat.
Develop better understanding of fish communities and habitat and of the socio-economics of the fisheries resources. Increase understanding of the effects of environmental and social changes, as well as the impact of management actions.
Improve communication of knowledge to managers, other agencies and the public to ensure understanding of the implications of management actions.

6. Enforce firmly and effectively.

Ensure enforcement priorities reflect protection and rehabilitation needs.
Focus efforts on regulating the harvest of naturally reproducing fish stocks.
Increase efforts to ensure compliance with legislation.
Evaluate effectiveness of enforcement efforts.

With this Strategic Plan, the Ministry of Natural Resources is providing the leadership for management of aquatic ecosystems in the province. However, fulfilling these goals can only be accomplished with the commitment and efforts of all the people of Ontario.

How to Make an Ice Fishing Rod, for Cheep!

Time tested and true, Our ice fishing rods are over 15 years old, easy to pack and cost very little to make. Supplies that you need:
Old, broken hockey stick (approx 2 feet long with a 45 angle cut on top and base of stopper attached.)
spring door stopper, that screws into the base(stopper spring is attached to wooden dowel)
wooden dowel
2 screw in eyes, (one to guide the line up the stick, one to hold the line at the tip of the wooden dowel)
Old Mitchell fishing real spoil (attached 1/2 way down the hockey stick)
dark color spray paint (for wooden dowel to see better when the fish bite)

Why do they work, the tension on the Mitchell real, can be set to the fishing conditions needed. Mitchell has built top-quality fishing tackle since 1948 almost everyone has an old Mitchell real laying around. They are easy to break down and pack flat in your fishing gear bag. The wood doesn't freeze up in the cold weather. You can hold a lot of fishing line on the real for Large Northern and Trout. You can keep a jig on it when packing up by poking it into the wood.

What a year, It’s been a busy one for everyone. Fishing, Hunting, Repairs and Family kept us all busy in 2011 and before we know it, it will be 2012 Spring Fishing Season. What’s New in the News for 2012

· Remember to bring your Ontario Outdoor Card that came in the Mail. They are good for three years and must be shown at the time of purchase of your 2012 fishing license and to show the MNR or DNR officer upon request. See the Blog if you need to renew your outdoor card or they can be renewed at camp. We will have a new electronic system at camp.

· Passports are now a MUST to re-enter back into the USA.

· Liquor Laws have changed, anyone drinking and driving the Boat can be charged on their drivers’ license with a DUI in Canada.

· We are supporting the Ontario Federation of Angler’s and Hunters, Ontario Angler Awards. We hope everyone enjoys catching and reporting all trophy fish from Pakwash Lake. http://www.ontarioanglerawards.com information is available in the cabins.

· We have increased our deposits to $200 per adult and ask that Deposit’s are in by the end of January. We can accept Visa and Master card deposits and payments this year.

· We are asking everyone to let the big fish go. Fishing has been improving over the past years and we are seeing an increase of size. Please let all walleye over 18 inches go, and all Northern over 27 inches go. This will keep our fish population improving over the years to come. Thank You.

· We have three new 2011 Lund Outfitter Boats and Motors. Only $705 per week includes the gas in the rental. Please let us know if you are interested in renting them. Max 705 lbs capacity.

Blue Walleye Update

Attached are a couple photos of blue walleye from McKim Lake. Also attached are two microscope photos (200X) showing a new family of cells, found only in Canadian walleye producing Sandercyanin (the blue pigment). The microscope photos are from a cross section of walleye skin. The free surface of the skin is at the top of each photo. Photo 1 is from McKim Lake and shows the pigment-containing cells as light purple under the dark purple mucus cells. Photo 2 is from Lake Erie where no pigment-containing cells are present. Feel free to use these photos as you like.

Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)

These come in many styles: keyhole jackets, vests, coats and coveralls, and are available in many approved colours. They are not reversible and they will not turn the wearer face up in the water. They are more comfortable and suitable for constant wear. The new inflatable PFDs are legal on the condition that they are worn in an open boat, on deck or in the cockpit at all times. They are not approved for use by people under the age of 16 years or lighter than 36.3 kg (80 pounds). They are not approved for use on personal watercraft. The ones that inflate automatically when the wearer goes into the water cannot be used on sailboards.

NOTE: PFDs and Life Jackets are no longer legal if they have been altered, damaged or repaired.

Lifejackets

Standard “keyhole” lifejackets are reversible and are available in orange, red, or yellow. They come in different adult and children sizes, with weight/size designation on the label. They are easy to put on and, when properly worn, they are designed to turn the wearer face up in the water and hold the head above water. They are bulky and uncomfortable.

We ask that all children at camp bring there own Life-jackets to ensure proper fit for their safety.

Personal Watercraft Boats in Ontario Need the Following

Personal Watercraft (PWC)

One approved personal flotation device (PFD) or lifejacket of appropriate size for everyone on board. Each device must have the Department of Transport Canada or Canadian Coast Guard/Fisheries and Oceans label and be in good working order..
A buoyant heaving line at least 15 metres (50 feet) long
A watertight flashlight or three Canadian approved type A B or C flares
A sound signalling device or appliance
Approved navigation lights if the craft is operated after sunset, before sunrise or in periods of restricted visibility (The Canadian Coast Guard and PWC manufacturers advice against operating these vessels at night)
A paddle, oar, or other manual propelling device or an anchor with at least 15 metres (50 feet) of cable, rope and/or chain
One bailer or manual water pump with enough hose to pump water from the bilge over the side of the vessel
One Class 5BC fire extinguisher

NOTE 6, 7, and 8 are not required if all people on board are wearing approved flotation devices

Pleasure Craft over 6 metres (20 feet) but less than 8 metres (26 feet)

Six Canadian approved type A B or C flares. Signalling devices are not required if the vessel operates in a river, canal or lake and can be no more than one mile from shore – or – if it is engaged in an official competition or in final preparation for official competition and has no sleeping arrangements
One Class 5BC fire extinguisher if the craft is a power-driven vessel and another 5BC fire extinguisher if the vessel has a fuel burning cooking, heating or refrigeration appliance

Canada Customs Responsibilities:

Monitor and Control the entry of people and goods into Canada by keeping out goods that could threaten Canadian?s health, environment, industry of agriculture.

To keep prohibited goods such as drugs, certain firearms and pornography out of the country.

Look for missing children and runaways

Always carry proof of your citizenship - a valid passport is required to enter Canada.

Bringing Children into Canada:
If you are travelling with children, make sure you carry ID for each child. Divorced parents who share custody of their children should carry copies of the legal custody documents. Adults who are not parents or guardians should have written permission from the parents.

Pets:
Dogs and cats from the U.S. that are at least 3 months old need signed and dated certificates from a veterinarian verifying that they have been vaccinated against rabies within the last 3 years.

Prescription Drugs:
Make sure your drugs are clearly identified. Drugs should be in the original packaging.

Gifts:
Non-residents can import gifts to Canada duty free and tax free as long as each gift is valued at CAN $60.00 or less. Otherwise, duty and tax is payable. You cannot claim alcoholic beverages, tobacco products or advertising matter as gifts.

Reporting of Aircraft and Vessels:
If you are arriving in Canada by private aircraft or vessel, you have to land at a designated place for customs reporting. In an emergency situation, such as severe weather conditions, you may have to land your vessel or aircraft at a place that is not designated. In this case, you have to report the circumstances to a customs office or to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Before leaving the US, heading for Canada you should call one of our customs officers at 1-888-226-7277 at least one hour, but not more than 72 hours, before flying into Canada and notify them of your intended destination in Canada. Hours of Customs Service may vary by airport check times for your chosen destination.

Vessels:
When you arrive in Canada by boat, you have to report to a customs officer by telephone through a vessel-reporting station. Call 1-888-226-7277 for more info.

Radio Transmitting Equipment:
US residents are allowed to operate aircraft, marine, amateur, citizen band (CB), Family Radio Service (FRS) as well as cellular and PCS mobile radios telephones in Canada without getting permission from the Minister of Industry.

Laurentian Goldfields Update For Pakwash

A fantastic summer of fieldwork is behind us and most of the Laurentian Goldfields exploration team is taking a little time off before a busy winter season starts up. We still have a crew hard at work in the Abitibi, as part of our ongoing generative program in Quebec, but we expect them home before the snow flies, or at least before it needs to be shovelled regularly. Here is quick update on our ongoing exploration programs...

Goldpines North Joint Venture (50/50) with Kinross Gold Corporation

At Goldpines North Joint Venture (GPNJV), Laurentian Goldfields has completed an extensive program of mapping, overburden removal and rock, soil and lake sediment sampling. This work has turned up a number of compelling geochemical anomalies, the highlight of which is the drill-ready Pakwash Lake Anomaly, at the centre of the GPNJV property.

The 4 km by 2 km Pakwash Lake anomaly is defined by detailed lake sediment sampling on a 100m by 200 m spaced sample grid and is characterized by elevated gold and antimony, flanked by a larger arsenic halo. Of the 484 samples that define the anomaly, 215 ran greater than 100 parts per billion (ppb) Au, with values ranging up to 843 ppb Au.

The Pakwash Lake anomaly is spatially associated with the intersection of two prominent faults, one of which marks the contact between meta-sedimentary rocks and a large diorite intrusion. The characteristics of the Pakwash Lake anomaly appear to support Laurentian's exploration model, which is targeting a large, sediment-hosted gold deposit, similar to the Roberto Zone at Goldcorp's Éléonore project, in the James Bay region of Quebec.

Laurentian recently sat down to review this year's results with our partners at Kinross. The results look good and Kinross has elected to fund $1 million worth of diamond drilling, subject to the approval of the budget by senior Kinross management and its Board of Directors. Drilling is scheduled to be completed during Q1 of 2011 and will be managed by Laurentian's technical team.

Goldpines South Project

Throughout the summer, Laurentian has run the Goldpines South project concurrently with work at GPNJV. The exploration programs were similar for both projects, incorporating rock, soil and lake sediment sampling and overburden removal and channel sampling within select gold-in-soil anomalies. Near the end of the season, most of our work focused on the Granite, SLF, and West Leg targets, which were defined by soil sampling earlier in the summer.

Our work at Goldpines South has been fully funded by AngloGold Ashanti, who have an option to earn up to 60% interest in the project via the ongoing Superior Alliance (see news release dated April 29, 2009). We'll be reviewing the 2010 results with our partners at AngloGold Ashanti later this month. We look forward to updating you on our progress as soon as possible.

Abitibi Generative Project

Back in September we announced that part of technical team was heading to Quebec to begin prospecting in the Abitibi Subprovince (see news release dated September 29, 2010). Our geologists have completed a four week field program of prospecting, rock and soil geochemical sampling and a regionally extensive hydro-geochemical survey.

The rocks of the Abitibi represent one of the most prolific gold environments in the world and we're excited to be applying the innovative geological concepts and cost-effective techniques that to date have been so critical to the success of our exploration programs elsewhere, in order to generate new opportunities for Laurentian Goldfields in Quebec.

Given the large amount of data our geologists have collected so far, the analytical results are still rolling in. Based on some encouraging features they observed in the field, our Abitibi team has decided to head back to Quebec, to work up a couple of the target areas a little more, before winter sets in.

We'll provide updates on our results as soon as we've have them all in hand.

Griffith Mine History

The Griffith Property was originally staked in 1953 by L. Dempster, J. Dempster and A. C. Mosher, employees of a syndicate managed by Calmor Mines Limited. Iron Bay Mines Limited was formed in February 1954 and acquired the Griffith Property. An option agreement between Iron Bay Mines Limited and the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company in 1959 resulted in the undertaking of a joint venture program, at least until 1960.
The Griffith Property was optioned in 1963 to Taconite Lake Iron Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Pickands Mather & Co. This option, on behalf of Pickands Mather & Co. and Stelco gave Pickands Mather & Co. exclusive rights for a two year period to explore and evaluate the Griffith Property. Taconite Lake Iron Co. Ltd. exercised its option on April 27, 1965, acquiring a 75-year lease on all mining lands held by Iron Bay Mines Limited in the Bruce Lake area.

So far we are safe but the bush is very dry and the heat is not helping us. Walleye are slow and down to 25 feet with evening fishing the best. We need some rain the lake levels are falling daily.

Red Lake Area has the following, New Fires Today is one, Active Fires is 42, Total Fires to Date is 116, and Total Hectares to Date is 159526.6 burnt.

Tom Maigaard my nephew was the star fisherman this year with the largest walleye of the group and also a silver muskie to his credit..
The Weber family has been coming to Pakwash Lake Camp for over 35 years I think he said. They have some great Pakwash Stories. Both Dave and Dad caught 18 lbs Northerns from the Lake and John's favoirte Fishing lure was maid from a Girls Bead making kit. Everytime he uses it he catches fish. One time he lost it and Brother Dave caught 1 1/2 lbs Walleye that had his lure in it. Oh the Stories they can tell. Thanks for the Great pictures.

Well we have just had a few warmer days and some sunshine and the ice is starting to show some signs of melting. All the creeks and rivers are open and the shoreline is starting to breakaway. There is around 18 to 20 inches of slush and ice so here we go. Lets keep the sunshine going. My bets are for May 11th Denis is thinking May 15th.

What should one bring to Camp for fishing!

Essential Clothing
• Good rain gear - more important than new tackle.
• Water proof footwear - rubber boots, over shoes, gortex hikers. Wet feet will shorten any day on the water. Winter boots for spring and fall fishing is a must.
• Comfortable shoes - these are for everyday and to wear in the cabin as well.
• Warm socks - I always carry a spare pair of warm wool socks in my gear bag.
• Long underwear - a must in spring and fall but I would pack a pair for every trip.
• Turtle neck shirt - nice to keep the drafts out
• Wool hat and peak hat - keep the sun off your head and keep it warm
• Personal clothing - pants, shirts, underwear etc
• Gloves or mittens - mittens are always warmer but tough to reel in with
• Warm coat - that will fit under your rain coat
• Shorts or zip away paints - for those gorgeous summer days
• We recommend you always bring warm clothes anytime of the year.

Miscellaneous Camp Gear
• Ziploc bags - use to store socks, camera etc in in your dry bag
• Mosquito coils - for in the cabin if you are one to leave the door open a lot
• Good Book - for when your buddy is snoring just a little too loud
• Extra Batteries for all your electronic devices
• Flash Light - we may have flush toilets but the outhouses still work in a pinch
• Paper plates & paper cups - great if nobody in your crew likes to do dishes
• Gallon or two of cooking oil
• Fish Batter
• Paper towels - for drying off your cooked fish
• Charcoal - we do have grills available at the cabins.
• Computer - for those who need to stay in touch we have WIFI
• Mini - DVD player/TV with DVDs we do have movies if you need a change.
• Vacuum sealer - for those who want air tight
• Wind up or battery alarm clock if you need to know the time
• Sleeping Bags for the cold nights & Beach towel

Boat Gear
• Life Jacket (Canadian or U.S. Coast Guard approved.)
• Dry Bag - use to store rain gear, socks, camera etc in boat
• Back Pack - could be a dry bag but use it to carry gear on portage trails
• Large Rubbermaid container - used for shore lunch fixings and/or dry box in boat
• Small first aid kit - just incase
• Sun Block - use it...a lot
• Insect repellant - wet seasons bring bugs
• Matches / lighter – shore lunch becomes sushi
• Hand warmers - a pleasant bonus
• Medication
• Safety string for glasses - imagine springtime, 50 degree crystal clear water, 12 ft down, oops...you decide
• Water bottle - hydration keeps you on the water
• Flashlight - just because
• Multi-tool - you never know when
• Small tackle box or tray to pack in back pack for portage lakes
• Long needle nose pliers or hookouts
• Small bolt cutters - sometimes cutting the hook is best
• Jaw spreaders - they help
• Line clippers – Fireline = chipped teeth
• Fishing rags for the boat

• Portable rod holder - for landing your buddies fish
• Fish locator - handy
• 2 rods & reels - is two enough
• Stringer - I prefer a rope stringer just don't put it through the mouth and gills

• Lindy Catch and Release glove - kevlar is tooth proof
• Camera - in a ziploc bag -document your big fish
• Spare batteries (try to bring gear that uses the same battery size)

• Small cooler - we have complimentary ice
• Marker buoy - cheap fish locator

Yes the snow has just started to melt down and we still have over 3 feet of strong Ice. On April 15th the walleye season will be closed until Opening May 21st. We have already noticed the Northern and Walleye are moving up rivers to the streams and rapids. The sun is shinning and Ice Fishing has been fantastic. We look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Nearly 1,400 deer heads were tested for chronic wasting disease last year in Ontario.
Ministry of Natural Resources Wildlife Research Technician Tore Buchanan says 362 deer heads were tested in the Dryden, Kenora and Fort Frances Districts.
The heads all tested negative to the fatal disease.
The disease has never been found in wild deer in Ontario, but has been identified in Western Canada and many American states.
The program will run this year in Peterborough, Windsor, Owen Sound and other parts of Southern Ontario.

To better protect the province from chronic wasting disease, Ontario has new rules related to hunting with natural attractants and possessing carcasses of cervids or their high risk parts from out of province, or transporting live white-tailed deer, elk, moose or woodland caribou into the province.

NEW RULES FOR:

1) hunters using natural attractants (e.g., deer urine used for hunting)

2) anyone who wishes to transport or possess carcasses or their high risk parts of any member of the deer family (e.g., moose, caribou) into Ontario from out of province, or,

3) anyone who wishes to transport live white-tailed deer, American elk, moose or woodland caribou into Ontario

Trucks were driven off one scow and loaded onto another scow to take them to English River. Laurentian Goldfields Ltd. Commences Drilling at Goldpines North Joint Venture

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 3, 2011) - Laurentian Goldfields Ltd. (TSX VENTURE:LGF) ("Laurentian", or, the "Company") is pleased to announce that diamond drilling at the Goldpines North Joint Venture ("GPNJV"), a 50/50 joint venture with Kinross Gold Corporation ("or Kinross") (NYSE:KGC) has commenced. The GPNJV is located on Ontario Highway 105, approximately 35 kilometres southeast of Red Lake, Ontario and encompasses 21,976 ha.

The first phase of drilling on the GPNJV will consist of a minimum of 3000 metres of NQ-diameter coring. It is designed to test coincidental, high-grade gold in lake sediment values and aeromagnetic anomalies within the extensive Pakwash Lake target. "We believe that the Pakwash Lake target is amongst the best untested lake sediment anomalies in Canada" said Andrew Brown, President and CEO of Laurentian Goldfields Ltd., "We are unaware of another gold anomaly of this kind, that matches the size, grade and consistency of Pakwash Lake and we are excited to be turning a drill on this exceptional target."

Drill pads have been prepared for three fences of a total of nine drill holes. This initial drilling will be fully funded by Kinross Gold Corp. Upon completion of the $1 million drill program, Kinross will have earned a 75% interest in the GPNJV (see news release dated March 31, 2010).

About the Pakwash Lake Target

The 4 km by 2 km Pakwash Lake Target is defined by detailed lake sediment sampling on a 100 metre by 200 metre spaced sample grid and is characterized by elevated gold and antimony values, flanked by a larger arsenic halo. Of the 484 samples that define the anomaly, 215 ran greater than 100 parts per billion (ppb) gold, with values ranging up to 843 ppb gold.

Wild Rice Recipes

How to Cook Wild Rice

Stir 1 cup rice into 6 cups (1.5 L) of boiling salted water.
Boil gently, stirring occasionally, for 50 minutes, or until kernels just split open
(not every kernel will open).
Drain. Over-cooking will create a mushy product.
Tip: Wild rice is cooked in much the same manner as pasta,
the more clean, cold water used, the better it is!

FAR NORTH WILD RICE CASSEROLE

Ingredients:

1½ cups uncooked wild rice
1 medium onion, diced
1 medium green pepper, diced
3 cups fresh mushrooms, sliced
¾ cup celery, diced
½ lb. bacon, diced (or, your choice of meat)
1 cup frozen peas
½ cup Soya sauce (or chicken broth)
pepper to taste

Method:

Cook rice according to “Cooking Instructions”. Brown meat, remove from pan, set aside. Drain extra fat. In 2 tbsp oil (or butter), stir fry mushrooms, onions, celery and green peppers to desired tenderness and toss with cooked rice. Add meat, peas, Soya sauce, and pepper then gently stir fry over medium heat until warmed through.
Serves: 6-8

POPPED WILD RICE

Popped wild rice can be used as an interesting replacement for croutons in a salad, or as a garnish on soups, and casseroles. Not all wild rice will pop successfully. The best wild rice to use is hand processed wild rice that usually has more moisture left in each kernel, which will expand when heated.

Place about ½ inch of oil in a small, shallow pan with a small strainer set in the oil. Heat at high temperature until oil is at about 450 F. Drop one rice kernel into the strainer. When it sizzles, cracks open and expands to about double its length, the oil is ready. (You may wish to reduce the heat temporarily.) Add 1 tablespoon of rice at a time to the oil. When all the kernels have expanded (which constitutes the popping), empty the strainer onto paper toweling. Repeat, adjusting heat as necessary. Crisp popped rice may be seasoned with salt, pepper, and mixed herbs to enhance the flavor. This popped rice can be made in large quantities and stored in a sealed container for several weeks.

WILD RICE and CHICKEN BREASTS

Ingredients:

1 1/3 cups uncooked wild rice
1 tbsp olive oil
6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 cup heavy cream
2 tbsp sun dried tomatoes, chopped
1 tbsp fresh basil leaves, chopped

Method:

Cook wild rice according to “How to Cook Wild Rice”. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Turn into a shallow buttered casserole. In heavy skillet, heat the oil. Add chicken and sauté over medium heat until just cooked through and browned. Remove chicken breasts and arrange over bed of wild rice in casserole. Add cream to the skillet the chicken was cooked in. Bring to a boil, stirring to bring all the brownings into the cream. Add the chopped sun dried tomatoes and salt and pepper to taste. Pour sauce over chicken breasts. Cover and bake at 350 F just until heated through, about 20-30 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and serve hot.
Serves: 6

WILD RICE CHEESE SOUP

Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, diced
1 cup uncooked wild rice
1 (10.75 oz) can condensed cream of potato soup
1 (10.75 oz) can condensed cream of chicken soup
1 cup milk
1 cup evaporated milk
1 lb processed cheese, cubed
1 tbsp Italian seasoning

Method:

In a medium skillet, fry the ground beef and onions until no longer pink. Drain and set aside. In a small saucepan, cook wild rice with 2 cups of water until tender; set aside. In a stockpot, combine the cooked ground beef and onions, rice, potato and chicken soups, milk and evaporated milk. Cook over low heat until warm. Stir in processed cheese and heat, stirring occasionally until chest is melted.
Serves: 12

WILD RICE SALAD

Ingredients:

1 cup wild rice, cooked (raw measurement)
2 large carrots, grated
¾ cup golden raisins
¾ cup mayonnaise
¾ cup Russian or Catalina (or other sweet dressing)

Method:

These amounts can be varied to taste – this is a guideline.
Red, green and yellow peppers (cut up) can be substituted for the carrots.

Excellent made ahead of time – and keeps up to one week in the fridge.

FRUITED FALL WILD RICE STUFFING

Ingredients:

1 cup diced celery
2 cups diced onion
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp poultry seasoning
2 tsp cinnamon
1 lb. pork sausage
5 cups day old white bread, cubed
5 cups day old whole wheat bread, cubed
6 cups wild rice, cooked and cooled
5 apples, peeled, cored and chopped (Macs or any crisp tart apple is nice)
½ cup dried apricots, roughly chopped
½ cup raisins
½ cup dried cranberries
½ cup slivered almonds
2 cups chicken broth
juice and zest of one orange
2 tbsp dark brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste

Method:

In a large frying pan, saute the celery and onion in the butter until onion becomes clear and celery is tender. Transfer to a large mixing bowl and stir in poultry seasoning and cinnamon. In same pan crumble and brown the sausage. Drain off excess fat and add the sausage to the vegetable mixture. Place all remaining ingredients in the bowl and mix very well to combine. At this point, if the bread is too dry, more broth may be added to obtain a nice moist consistency.

Results in stuffing for one large turkey. Remember to half this recipe if you are planning to stuff a chicken. It may also be baked in a large casserole at 350 for one hour until thoroughly heated and lightly browned on top.

WILD RICE CASSEROLE

Ingredients:

1 cup rice
4 cups boiling water
¼ cup oil
¼ cup Soya sauce
1 can mushroom pieces (not drained)
1 medium onion chopped
1 package chicken noodle soup

Method:

Mix together in casserole.
Sprinkle a little pepper over top.
Bake at 325 for 2 to 3 hours.
The liquid will disappear and should be like an ordinary rice pudding when baked.
Stir a couple of times while cooking.
* Note: Rice can be soaked overnight - adjust cooking time accordingly

WILD RICE AND MANGO SUMMER SALAD

This refreshing Thai inspired salad is simple to prepare and pairs well with grilled chicken or pork. If mangoes are unavailable, segmented oranges can be substituted to make a zesty citrus variation.

Ingredients:

5 cups cooked wild rice, well drained and cooled
2 ripe mangoes, cubed
½ cup diced red pepper
½ cup finely diced red onion

Dressing:

2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp honey
4 tbsp light sesame oil (not toasted)
1 clove garlic, minced
½ tsp chili flakes
1 tsp salt
½ cup chopped peanuts, lightly toasted

Method:

Combine rice, mangoes, pepper and onion in serving bowl. In a small bowl, whisk together dressing ingredients. Pour over salad and gently stir to combine well. Just before stirring fold in the toasted peanuts.
Serves 6

This has been a hard freeze up so we took a look to see if we could find the facts. When is the ice safe!
Anything under 4 inches of clear ice is unsafe to support 200 pounds. So I told Denis he better stay off the ice! :)

5 inches - 800 pounds, one snowmobile
7 inches - 1500 pounds, a group of people
8 inches - 2000 pounds, one car
11 inches is recommended for light trucks.

Taking a drive up to South Bay Mine there is a special place to stop called Big Falls. It just a stop and short walk in and you can see Trout Lake feeding into Trout Lake River. It use to be the heritage travel route in the old days before the roads. Mandy and Corey took some great pictures.

It’s been a great holiday season for all of us and I thought I’d take some time to wish all of our friends Merry Christmas & Happy New Years! We’ve been busy as usual with Fishing, Hunting and some House Renovations but now the ice fishing will start and snow machine season starts in full swing!

2010 was a busy camp season with Denis working at the mine, myself holding down the fort with help from Colin and David Ross we would like to thank everyone for a good season. We were able to get a few things done off the hunny do list. New roof’s, cabins & docks painted and the break wall repairs it was all in all a productive season. Hunting was very good too, this past season 4 bears, 9 moose, 16 deer and one wolf the other day was the final total of the season for camp. This fall we were able to get the upstairs renovations, walls & downstairs walls jip rocked and working on the painting. We hope to have the Upstairs finished this winter and someday I will have the new kitchen by 2012 is the goal.

Some good news: Our son Shawnisty & his wife Nicole are expecting our first grandchild sometime in July 2011. We are very excited! Jocelynn is finishing University Feb 2011 with her BSCN and will be a Reg. Nurse. Corey is living in Ear Falls and is Working Full time for the same company as Denis, he’s doing well. Yes It’s now our time to sit back and breath. We survived the Kids!

The new 2011 rates are set. I hope the US dollar holds, it’s still our goal to keep Pakwash Lake Camp’s fishing vacations affordable for everyone. We’ve seen an increased summer patronage with Families, Smallmouth bass fishing and bear hunting. Thank you to everyone for their word of mouth advertising. It is making the difference during these economic hard times.

Camp brochures will be sent out in the New Year. We also hope to update the website soon. Any photos and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Most of the spring fishing is full with repeat guests’ reservations we do have openings starting June 25th week and a few people listed on a waiting list for May and June fishing weeks. If your still planning and yet to reserve a cabin or If your unable to make your reservation please let us know as soon as possible so we can rearrange weeks with other guests. Thank you.
